I want to do translations of articles and such more frequently, in order to learn more Welsh vocabulary relating to current events and such, and to hopefully eventually push my Welsh skills out of B2 and into C1.

'Diwylliant gwenwynig' yn sgil cynllun i dorri swyddi ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd
'Toxic culture' as a result of plan to cut jobs at Cardiff University

Mae cynllun Prifysgol Caerdydd i dorri 400 o swyddi wedi arwain at "ddiwylliant gwenwynig", yn ôl cyn-weinidog addysg Cymru.
Cardiff University's plan to cut 400 jobs has lead to a "toxic culture", according to former education minister for Wales.

Dywedodd Leighton Andrews, sy'n athro yn Ysgol Fusnes Caerdydd, bod "y syniad o siarad yn agored wedi creu teimlad o ofn yn y brifysgol" a bod hynny wedi effeithio'n fawr ar foral staff.
Leighton Andrews, a professor at Cardiff Business School, said that "the idea of speaking openly has created a feeling of fear at the university" and that that has greatly effected the morale of the staff.

Ym mis Ionawr cyhoeddodd y brifysgol eu cynllun i ddod â swyddi i ben a rhoi'r gorau i ddysgu pynciau gan gynnwys cerddoriaeth a nyrsio er mwyn mynd i'r afael â bwlch o £31m yn y gyllideb.
In January the university announced their plan to end jobs and abandon teaching subjects including music and nursing to address a £31m gap in the budget.

Mae Prifysgol Caerdydd wedi cael cais i ymateb i sylwadau'r Athro Andrews.
Cardiff University has been requested to respond to Professor Andrews' comments.

Mewn datganiad blaenorol, maen nhw'n pwysleisio mai cynllun ydi'r toriadau ac nad oes unrhywbeth wedi ei gadarnhau hyd yma.
In a previous statement, they emphasise that the cuts are a plan and that nothing has been confirmed so far.

Wrth gael ei holi ar raglen Sunday Supplement BBC Radio Wales, dywedodd Leighton Andrews: "Yn syml iawn, maen nhw wedi difethu'r ymddiriedaeth a'r ewyllys da o fewn y brifysgol.
When asked on BBC Radio Wales' Sunday Supplement programme, Leighton Andrews said "Very simply, they have destroyed the trust and the good will within the university.

"A dyma'r bobl rydych chi eu hangen - yr academyddion sy'n rhoi hwb i ddyfodol y brifysgol, sy'n gwneud ymchwil hanfodol sy'n torri tir newydd.
"And these are the people that you need - the academics who boost the future of the university, who do essential research that breaks new ground.

"Ond ar hyn o bryd, yr hyn mae pawb yn canolbwyntio arno yw eu swyddi.
"But at the moment, what everyone is focusing on is their jobs.

"Dwi'n meddwl fod pethe'n teimlo'n wenwynig iawn", ychwanegodd Mr Andrews.
"I think that things feel very toxic," added Mr Andrews [wasn't he "Professor" earlier!?]

Roedd Leighton Andrews eisioes wedi sôn am ei ddicter wrth i'w swydd yn darlithio ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd ddod dan fygythiad.
Leighton Andrews had already mentioned his anger as his job lecturing at Cardiff University came under threat.

Mae'r brifysgol ar hyn o bryd yn ymgynghori ar y cynlluniau i dorri 7% o'u staff academaidd a bydd penderfyniad terfynol yn cael ei wneud ym mis Mehefin.
The university is currently consulting on the plans to cut 7% of their academic staff and a final decision will be made in June.

Mae'r cynigion hefyd yn cynnwys cau rhai pynciau ac adrannau yn llwyr, ac uno adrannau eraill - gan gynnwys busnes, cerddoriaeth, nyrsio, ac ieithoedd modern a chyfieithu.
The proposals also include closing some subjects and departments completely, and amalgamating other departments - including business, music, nursing, and modern languages and translation.

Yn y cyfamser, mae aelodau o Undeb y Prifysgolion a Cholegau (UCU) yn pleidleisio dros y posibilrwydd o fynd ar streic i wrthwynebu'r diswyddiadau gorfodol posib.
Meanwhile, members of the University and College Union (UCU) are voting on the possibility of going on strike to oppose the possible compulsory redundancies.

Mae aelodau eisioes wedi protestio yn erbyn y cynlluniau.
Members have already protested against the plans.

Yn ôl Leighton Andrews, mae wedi pleidleisio o blaid gweithredu diwydiannol.
According to Leighton Andrews, he has voted in favour of industrial action.

Mae Mr Andrews yn awgrymu y dylai'r brifysgol ddefnyddio ychydig o'i harian wrth gefn a buddsoddiadau er mwyn atal rhai o'r toriadau posib.
Mr Andrews auggests that the university should use some of its reserves and investments to prevent some of the possible cuts.

"Fe allai gwneud hynny warchod dyfodol y brifysgol," dywedodd yr Athro Andrews, oedd yn gyfrifol am addysg yn Llywodraeth Cymru rhwng 2009 a 2013.
"Doing that could protect the future of the university," said Professor Andrews, who was responsible for education in the Welsh Government between 2009 and 2013.

Ym mis Chwefror, cyhoeddodd Prifysgol Bangor gynllun i gael gwared â 200 o swyddi wrth iddyn nhw geisio gwneud arbedion o £15m.
In February, Bangor University accounced a plan to get rid of 200 jobs as they attempt to save £15m.

Yn yr un diwrnod, cadarnhaodd Prifysgol De Cymru eu bod nhw'n trafod cynnig i dorri 90 o swyddi a'u bod wedi "gwneud y penderfyniad anodd i gael gwared ar rai pynciau" wedi i gyrsiau y myfyrwyr presennol ddod i ben.
On the same day, the University of South Wales confirmed that they are discussing a proposal to cut 90 jobs and that they have "made the difficult decision to get rid of some subjects" after the current students' courses end.

Ar y pryd, dywedodd llefarydd ar ran Llywodraeth Cymru: "Mae'r Gweinidog Addysg Bellach ac Uwch, Vikki Howells wedi bod yn glir y dylid diwygio'r sector addysg uwch.
At the time, a spokesperson said on behalf of the Welsh Government: "The Minister for Further and Higher Education, Vikki Howells, has been clear that the higer education sector should be reformed.

"Mae gwaith eisoes ar y gweill gyda deddfwriaeth newydd yn ei le a chreu [corff newydd] Medr.
"Work is already underway with a new legislation in place and the creation of [a new body of] Medr [the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research].

"Yn ogystal, rydym wedi cyhoeddi £18.5m ar gyfer prifysgolion i'w helpu i leihau costau gweithredu.
"Additionally, we have accounced £18.5m for universities to help them to reduce operating costs.

"Rydym yn deall y pryderon ynghylch y sector addysg uwch a'r effaith y bydd hyn yn ei chael ar staff a dysgwyr yn y sefydliadau yma."
"We understand the anxieties surrounding the higher education sector and the effect that this will have on staff and learners in these establishments."

Mae Vikki Howells wedi annog prifysgolion i "ystyried pob opsiwn" er mwyn sicrhau na fydd pobl yn colli eu swyddi.
Vikki Howells has urged universities to "consider every option" to ensure that people won't lose their jobs.

New words for me:
  • gwenwynig - poisonous, venomous, toxic
  • mynd i’r afael â - to come to grips with, to address
  • holi - to question, to inquire, to ask
  • hwb - a push, a thrust, a lift up, a push forward
  • rhoi hwb - to give a boost to
  • hanfodol - crucial, essential, vital
  • bygythiad - a threat, a menace
  • ymgynghori - to consult, to confer
  • terfynol - final
  • cynnig - an offer, a proposal, a motion, to offer, to aim, to threaten (I knew about the "an/to offer" meaning, but not the others)
  • uno - to amalgamate, to unite, to join
  • diswyddiad - a redundancy, a job cut
  • wrth gefn - in reserve
  • arian wrth gefn - monetary reserves
  • buddsoddiad - an investment
  • cael gwared ar - to get rid of
  • llefarydd - a spokesperson
  • diwygio - to amend, to reform, to revise
  • gweithredu - to operate, to act, to implement, to accomplish

Overall, dissapointed in the number of words I had to look up, but hopefully the more articles I read, the less I'll have to use the dictionary.

Translating is an excellent way to learn vocabulary and using news articles means you'll learn useful words that you'll see often in the future. If you went for passages from novels, the words might be more poetic but less useful.
