This is something of a sore point for me. Back when I was writing seriously with the goal of publication (late 90s-early 2000s), I was told by various agents that no one wanted fantasy based in Wales or Welsh legends because Celtic fantasy had been done to death and they wanted something more "interesting".

Leaving aside the fact that literary fiction is entirely based in one world, and usually a fairly narrow section of it, the "Celtic" fantasy that was now old hat had almost entirely been written by Americans.

I also remember many years ago on LiveJournal an American author asking for some advice about some Welsh sentences they wanted to use. This was for book 2 or 3 of a series. When we pointed out that the main character's name was wrong for their gender, the author dismissed this as irrelevant. They'd never had called a male hero "Jane" or a female main character "Kevin", but that's basically what they'd done with the Welsh name they'd given their character.

So I gave up all thoughts of getting the fantasy trilogy published and I'm now writing it just for fun.
